Alexa Update: 1,195,786

It’s been exactly two months since I posted Alexa 3,598,486 And Counting, which, as you can probably guess even without reading that post, that my Alexa ranking was 3,598,486. And you may also recall that my “goal” was to rank at least one spot better by June 20, 2010. Well, I’m proud as a reality show winner to announce that I’m way ahead of schedule.

My current (May 10, 2010) Alexa ranking: 1,195,786.

I think I hear crickets...

That’s an improvement an improvement of 2,402,700 places in two months!

Is that good? Beats the heck out of me. All I know is that Search Engine Viking is making strides to taking over the Internet as we know it.

What Is Alexa?

I still don’t know. I do know that it’s a measurement of a site’s popularity, but beyond that, I have no idea. And to be completely honest, I don’t really care. At least not at this moment. All I’m really interested in is the fact that my numbers have improved.

Alexa ranks sites. That’s all I know. The lower the number, the better. Kind of like golf, but with fewer product endorsement deals.

There’s a huge debate regarding the validity of Alexa’s system. Some people say it’s accurate (usually the people at the top), while others say the process is flawed. I personally don’t know. I’ve never cared enough to test it out. All I know is that I’d like to someday cross into the top 100,000, if for no other reason than I’d get a cool graph on the Alexa index.

How The Alexa Numbers Went Up

Because of awesome readers like you!

Seriously.

Readership and the “community” that builds around a website plays a big role in how Alexa tallies its figures. So your patronage – whether you occasionally skim this blog or have become a frequent commenter – is a big reason why I’ve made such a big jump. I think. Like I said, it’s all a big mystery.

But thank you!

My New Goal

Obviously I blasted past my original goal, and did so more than a month in advance. Let’s keep the momentum rolling:

Goal: Alexa Ranking of 1,000,000 by June 20, 2010.

Is this goal possible? I think so.

How You Can Help

I’ll definitely need some help getting to the one million mark. If you’d be so kind to help me out, I’ll love you forever (not that I already don’t).

Here are some super simple ways to help out:

Read Search Engine Viking. You don’t have to take notes, but simply coming back every once in a while to see what’s going on would be huge.

Comment On The Posts. Nothing fancy, just a little note here or there.

Link to this site. This is ginormous. Not only do backlinks help out Alexa, they help out with SEO (read What Are Backlinks if you’re unfamiliar with these). I’d love any “link love” you can offer, be it a link to the main URL – SearchEngineViking.com – or to any individual post(s).

I’m just wondering if this Alexa ranking means anything. My sites only been up since April 30, 2010 and it says I’m at 1,693,297. I wonder how they really know how much traffic I’m getting.

That’s a good question, Mike – and I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t know anything about Alexa, other than a low number is better than a high number…

There’s a lot of debate as to Alexa’s accuracy, or if it really even matters.

I’m enjoying your site! There are some very interesting articles. I see today your alexa rank is 798,246! Congrats.

I’ve recently started my own site, and trying to give it some of the attention it deserves. Have you found that the best source of traffic in the early stages comes from blog commenting?

I have also tried publishing articles to facebook, allowing friends to see them.

Hi Mark, thanks for coming by! And thanks for noticing my most recent Alexa ranking :) Honestly I haven’t check it since I wrote about it last, so thanks for pointing it out to me, it’s a great surprise.

As for your question about traffic, I’d say that blog commenting is huge, especially at first. Once you get a solid community built, I’d suggesting writing a couple of guest posts on “established” blogs – as the traffic can be amazing (so long as the other person’s blog is somewhat related to yours) and so can the backlinks.

I’ve never heard of publishing whole articles on Facebook, but I’m not the most up-to-date guy when it comes to social media :P You might have to give me some lessons…

    Rock On!

I may try and find a few blogs and see if they want guest writers. Cheers for the suggestion.

When I said publishing articles to facebook, I meant the links only lol – my mistake.

I got some traffic from it, but my site is that young that the traffic I got made a large impact. I’d say that the traffic you are getting is significantly more than I am, and social sites where only your friends see links may not impact as much. I’ll let you know how my progress goes though.

I gotcha now, Mark – posting links on Facebook I mean. I’ve posted links on my account to one of my comedy sites, but never this one. Just something I haven’t been that interested in, personally. Besides, most of my “friends” (and by that I mean my four real friends and the hundreds of other people who know me only because some hot girl they want to stalk is friends with me…) know me as a goofy funny guy, not so much an Internet Domination guy.

But who knows, maybe once this blog becomes the most popular site on the web (ha!) I’ll link it up to my other personal stuff, haha.

    Rock ON
